memories…of a doll I used to know…

Right, I am a little quirky but in no way as freaky as the rest of this blog is going to sound.

I have the worst memory, like the worst. I don’t know if its from too much wine over the years (especially the wine that comes from cardboard boxes that I was so fond of in my early 20’s) but, I just can’t remember much of my youth.

The other day work, for some strange reason, we were talking about dolls we had when we were little (random) and I remembered I had a fake cabbage patch kid (thanks mum) remembering how I knew it was fake because it didn’t have the signature on the bum. What I also remembered, was that I had a Strawberry Shortcake doll that when you pushed her tummy, she blew strawberry kisses!  Of I went to Ebay, found the doll (I actually got teary looking through the vintage dolls) and found my doll.  I shelled out £25.00 for her to be shipped from the states (missing a shoe) and on Tuesday, she was delivered.

Strawberry Shortcake (2)

As soon as I opened her and pushed the tummy, and OMG did memories come back.  I had suddenly been transported back to when I was 6, I can’t believe it.  It’s thrown me and I have been thinking a lot about smell and memory and have done a bit of research.  Apparently, the olfactory nerve that we use to smell is in very close proximity to the amygdala. This is the area of the brain that is focused on emotional memory and experiences emotion hence why certain smells jog certain memories. This is especially prevalent when I smell tequila, it certainly takes me back to a time I really want to block out!
